If A equals success, then the formula is: A equals X plus Y plus Z. X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut. --Albert Einstein, as quoted in Kiplinger's Personal Finance, Vol. 11, No. 7 (July 1957), p. 48

About me

Joseph "Jojit" Ballesteros is an active contributor to the online Wikimedia projects primarily on the Tagalog and English versions of Wikipedia. In Tagalog Wikipedia, he is an administrator, bureaucrat, and regular contributor. He is among the founding Trustees of the Wikimedia Philippines (WMPH) when it was still a local chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation. He served as Vice President from May 2010 to July 2011 and as President from July 2011 to May 2012. He also served as the Internal Auditor of WMPH.

After his work with WMPH, he continuously supports the objectives of the Wikimedia Foundation and the whole Wikimedia movement as well as other Wikimedia organizations in the Philippines including the PhilWiki Community User Group. He also collaborates with communities in the Philippines who aren't user groups or affiliates usually by giving talks and facilitating editing workshops. Specifically, he helps the Sinirangan Bisaya Wikimedia Community (SBWC) in their endeavors. He does these undertakings in his capacity even if he is not a member of these user groups or communities. In 2019, he co-founded the Hablon User Group (HUG), a community of volunteers for the Wikimedia movement, after not having a Wikimedia group for a time. All of the Wikimedia activities that he is currently doing are performed under HUG.

Outside Wikimedia, he is an Information Technology Professional focusing on software development life cycle (SDLC). He is also the Ministry Servant Head of the Flock of the Holy Spirit Catholic Charismatic community, where he regularly preaches and leads worship. He served primarily as the Education Ministry Head up to December 31, 2019 in the same Catholic community. He also served as Pastoral Team (PASTEM) Secretary, one of the Elders from 2014 to 2017, and Treasurer from January 2017 to February 2018. He also supports free culture and FOSS (free and open-source software). Occasionally, he delivers talks from different events covering various topics.

He was born in Pasig, Philippines, and finished a Bachelor in Computer Data Processing Management at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. He is married to Bel Ballesteros and lives in Paco, Manila.

My work

During Mr. Ballesteros' term as an officer of Wikimedia Philippines, he organized the WikiCon 2011; and coordinated and prepared the Philippine visit of Asaf Bartov, Head of the Global South Relationships of the Wikimedia Foundation. He helped in partnering with like-minded organizations such as Mozilla Philippines which resulted in the Open Web Day project, which he led.

Jojit contributes to Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, since September 2004. He actively promotes the goals of the Wikimedia movement in schools and conferences specifically giving presentations about its projects and free culture in general. He also conducts edit-a-thons in various parts of the Philippines. Since 2014, he has been actively promoting Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in Eastern Visayas as organized by the SBWC. The last offline edit-a-thon he supported and facilitated before the pandemic was the 9th Waray Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in April 2019, organized by SBWC in cooperation with the Division of Humanities of the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC).

As a Founding Member of HUG, the latest activity that he carried out before the COVID-19 pandemic is submitting a paper for the 2019 International Conference on Multicultural Education, Linguistics, Counselling, and Social Sciences (ICMELCSS). The paper is co-authored with the other co-founders of HUG namely Bel Ballesteros and Michael Ong. After the paper was accepted, he and Bel attended the conference and presented the paper. ICMELCSS was held from October 17 to 19, 2019 at Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology in Bunawan, Agusan Del Sur, Philippines.

During the pandemic, he was able to give a lightning talk online during Mozilla Philippines Monthly Meetup last April 2020 and was a resource person during a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon organized by UP Internet Freedom Network. His last offline activity outside the Philippines was in November 2022 when he and Bel Ballesteros presented their submitted paper entitled Open Knowledge using Indigenous Language – the Waray Wikipedia Experience in the Worlds of Wikimedia 2022 Conference (Wow2022) at the University of Sydney in Australia. The paper is also co-authored with Michael Ong. His last activity within the Philippines was in September 2023 during the 10th Waray Wikipedia Edit-a-thon held in Borongan, Eastern Samar.
