Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) coming to this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. It is soon time to enable the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) and things are looking good. The next step is English Wikipedia. This is planned for April 8. If everything works out fine we will deploy on all remaining Wikipedias on April 10. I will update this part of the FAQ if there are any issues forcing us to change this date. I will also sent another note to this village pump once the deployment is finished.

What will happen once we have phase 2 enabled here? Once it is enabled in a few days you will be able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!)

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p169}} in the wiki text of the article on Yahoo!. This will return “Marissa Mayer” as she is the chief executive officer of the company.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:chief executive officer}} instead of {{#property:p169}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can already test it on test2.

Where can I find more information and ask questions? We have collected the main questions in an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

I want to be kept up to date about Wikidata To stay up-to-date on everything happening around Wikidata please subscribe to the newsletter that is delivered weekly to subscribed user’s talk pages.

Hello!

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

Thanks, Billinghurst (thanks to all the translators!) 04:40, 24 Aibreán 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) is here

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. We have now enabled the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) a month ago and two days ago on the English Wikipedia. Today all the remaining Wikipedias followed.

What does having phase 2 enabled here mean? You are now able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!) The current state is just the beginning though. It will be extended based on feedback we get from you now.

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p159}} in the wiki text of the article on Wikimedia Foundation. This will return “San Francisco” as that is the headquarter location of the non-profit.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:headquarter location}} instead of {{#property:p159}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can test it on test2 if you don't want to do it in an article here.

We are excited about taking yet another step towards allowing all Wikipedias share structured data and collect and curate it together. --Lydia Pintscher 19:07, 24 Aibreán 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[en] Change to wiki account system and account renaming

Some accounts will soon be renamed due to a technical change that the developer team at Wikimedia are making. More details on Meta.

(Distributed via global message delivery 03:37, 30 Aibreán 2013 (UTC). Wrong page? Correct it here.)

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Detailed information and a timeline is available on meta.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

Page title translation request

(en) I have translated a book list called en:Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century into 30 or 35 languages. Lately I have been compiling an Irish version of the list.
What should the page title be when it's ready to set up?

Cheers, Varlaam (talk) 07:08, 28 Meitheamh 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's just fine for the first pass. There is often an adjustment down the road.
Is the capitalisation correct? Leabhair, for example. (But gawiki's naming conventions could very well be different from other projects.)
Thanks very much, Varlaam (talk) 05:30, 29 Meitheamh 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you've adopted the same capitalisation as the English. I am so used to other languages dropping all capitals that I forget my English title uses them. Does Irish follow the same "capitalise the key words" convention that English uses?

    • (Béarla ar an am seo, mar tá ar daoine eile é seo a léigh) - Ok, can you provide evidence that you have permission to copy these files from Fréamh an Eolais to ga.wikipedia? Who owns the copyright, and what will they be licensed under? We have to be super-careful that everything is above-board. At the least, if we get the go-ahead, we'll need to run the bot without the bot bit set for an initial run, just to make sure things are running as they should. Thanks again! - Alison 07:18, 30 Bealtaine 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • As Kevin Scannell mentioned, we have obtained the full support of both the author of Fréamh an Eolais, Matthew Hussey, and his publisher Coiscéim, and have two signed documents, one from each to that effect. If you let me know where to email these, or whatever else I need to do, I will take care of this. My role, just to clarify, was in suggesting that this great book be put on the wikipedia, and I am just nudging it along as best I can. —Scríobh an t-úsáideoir CiaranOB (plédréachtaí) an trácht roimhe seo, ach bhí síniú in easnamh.

        • Hi. Per Alison, while we expect to hear back on the licence implications on this soon, we have not yet heard-back. So can avoid using this bot to import content until we have a definitive answer please? Thanks Guliolopez (talk) 12:12, 20 Meitheamh 2013 (UTC)[reply]
          • Hi Guliolopez, what you saw yesterday were the results of my testing of the bot (it works!). I'll be away the next two weeks and can't do any more work on it in any case. So hopefully we'll have a response from the Community Advocacy director by that point and I can proceed then. I was thinking of posting the new articles slowly over the course of a couple of months. This way human editors can manually clean up and add bits that I wasn't able to handle automatically with my program (interwiki links, categories, and some style differences, e.g. no boldface "title" in many of the articles). Thoughts? Kevin Scannell (talk) 13:07, 20 Meitheamh 2013 (UTC)[reply]
            • Understood and agreed. Thanks. Guliolopez (talk) 13:51, 20 Meitheamh 2013 (UTC)[reply]
            • I was just wondering: Does anyone need copies of the authorizations from the author and the publisher, or do you have these already? Ciarán Ó Bréartúin
              • I am ... disappointed ... by the WMF's overall lack of engagement here. The community liaison officer has directed me to refer you guys to OTRS for permission management. Unfortunately, I'm not a copyright lawyer (or any other, for that matter), and I feel uncomfortable single-handedly managing this operation and being personally responsible for the integrity of our article legal compliance here. I need to think on this some more .... we'll figure out a plan. - Alison 17:53, 10 Iúil 2013 (UTC)[reply]
              • Things are back on again and I've received a positive response from someone connected to the WMF. Can you possibly contact me off-line so we can get this matter sorted? Maith agaibh! - Alison 06:35, 18 Iúil 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pywikipedia is migrating to git

Hello, Sorry for English but It's very important for bot operators so I hope someone translates this. Pywikipedia is migrating to Git so after July 26, SVN checkouts won't be updated If you're using Pywikipedia you have to switch to git, otherwise you will use out-dated framework and your bot might not work properly. There is a manual for doing that and a blog post explaining about this change in non-technical language. If you have question feel free to ask in mw:Manual talk:Pywikipediabot/Gerrit, mailing list, or in the IRC channel. Best Amir (via Global message delivery). 13:13, 23 Iúil 2013 (UTC)[reply]

VisualEditor and your Wikipedia

(Please translate this message)

Greetings,

The Wikimedia Foundation will soon turn on VisualEditor for all users, all the time on your Wikipedia. Right now your Wikipedia does not have any local documents on VisualEditor, and we hope that your community can change that. To find out about how you can help with translations visit the TranslationCentral for VisualEditor and read the easy instructions on bringing information to your Wikipedia. The User Guide and the FAQ are very important to have in your language.

We want to find out as much as we can from you about VisualEditor and how it helps your Wikipedia, and having local pages is a great way to start. We also encourage you to leave feedback on Mediawiki where the community can offer ideas, opinions, and point out bugs that may still exist in the software that need to be reported to Bugzilla. If you are able to speak for the concerns of others in English on MediaWiki or locally I encourage you to help your community to be represented in this process.

If you can help translate the user interface for VisualEditor to your language, you can help with that as well. Translatewiki has open tasks for translating VisualEditor. A direct link to translate the user interface is here. You can see how we are doing with those translations here. You need an account on Translatewiki to translate. This account is free and easy to create.

If we can help your community in any way with this process, please let me know and I will do my best to assist your Wikipedia with this |exciting development. You can contact me on my meta talk page or by email. You can also contact Patrick Earley for help with translations and documents on Mediawiki. We look forward to working with you to bring the VisualEditor experience to your Wikipedia! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:01, 30 Iúil 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notifications inform you of new activity that affects you -- and let you take quick action.

(This message is in English, please translate as needed)

Greetings!

Notifications will inform users about new activity that affects them on this wiki in a unified way: for example, this new tool will let you know when you have new talk page messages, edit reverts, mentions or links -- and is designed to augment (rather than replace) the watchlist. The Wikimedia Foundation's editor engagement team developed this tool (code-named 'Echo') earlier this year, to help users contribute more productively to MediaWiki projects.

We're now getting ready to bring Notifications to almost all other Wikimedia sites, and are aiming for a 22 October deployment, as outlined in this release plan. It is important that notifications is translated for all of the languages we serve.

There are three major points of translation needed to be either done or checked:

Please let us know if you have any questions, suggestions or comments about this new tool. For more information, visit this project hub and this help page. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 4 Deireadh Fómhair 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Introducting Beta Features

(Apologies for writing in English. Please translate if necessary)

We would like to let you know about Beta Features, a new program from the Wikimedia Foundation that lets you try out new features before they are released for everyone.

Think of it as a digital laboratory where community members can preview upcoming software and give feedback to help improve them. This special preference page lets designers and engineers experiment with new features on a broad scale, but in a way that's not disruptive.

Beta Features is now ready for testing on MediaWiki.org. It will also be released on Wikimedia Commons and MetaWiki this Thursday, 7 November. Based on test results, the plan is to release it on all wikis worldwide on 21 November, 2013.

Here are the first features you can test this week:

Would you like to try out Beta Features now? After you log in on MediaWiki.org, a small 'Beta' link will appear next to your 'Preferences'. Click on it to see features you can test, check the ones you want, then click 'Save'. Learn more on the Beta Features page.

After you've tested Beta Features, please let the developers know what you think on this discussion page -- or report any bugs here on Bugzilla. You're also welcome to join this IRC office hours chat on Friday, 8 November at 18:30 UTC.

Beta Features was developed by the Wikimedia Foundation's Design, Multimedia and VisualEditor teams. Along with other developers, they will be adding new features to this experimental program every few weeks. They are very grateful to all the community members who helped create this project — and look forward to many more productive collaborations in the future.

Enjoy, and don't forget to let developers know what you think! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:56, 5 Samhain 2013 (UTC)[reply]

VisualEditor coming to this wiki

Hello. Please excuse the English. I would be grateful if you can translate this message!

VisualEditor is coming to this project on December 2, 2013. VisualEditor is software in development to allow people to edit pages in MediaWiki without needing to learn wikitext syntax (like typing [[ to start a link). It is already available and in use on some Wikipedia projects. Please see mw:Help:VisualEditor/FAQ for more information.

When this software arrives, you will have the option to use it or to use the current wikitext editor. When you press “edit”, you will get the new VisualEditor software. To use the wikitext editor, you can press “edit source”. For more information about how to use VisualEditor, see mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide.

We hope that this software will be useful to people in your community, and we can really use your help to make it better! Please let us know if you find any problems. If you're willing and able, please report the issue in bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product. If you would prefer not, please explain the issue you found on the central feedback page on mediawiki.org. Once VisualEditor is made available, if there are any urgent problems, like an unexpected bug suddenly causing widespread severe problems, please e-mail James Forrester, the Product Manager, at jforrester@wikimedia.org for immediate attention.

We would also appreciate help with translation with the pages about VisualEditor here and on MediaWiki.org, and its user interface. To translate the user interface, start by creating an account at TranslateWiki. Once your account request is approved, all you need to do is select your language from this list. This will give you a list of individual lines and paragraphs. The English original will be on one side, with the option to “edit” on the other. Pressing “edit” will open an edit window where you can work.

The User Guide is another important document. To translate this, simply go to the MediaWiki.org page, and select “translate this page”. Your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. If you want to help with translations and would like to talk about how, please leave a message for me on my talk page.

VisualEditor coming soon to Irish Wikipedia

Haileo! Please excuse the English. I would be grateful if you can translate this message! (I'm Irish-Canadian, but I don't speak the tongue. And my Dad has forgotten most of his :)

VisualEditor is coming to the Irish Wikipedia, probably sometime in January. VisualEditor is software in development to allow people to edit pages in MediaWiki without needing to learn wikitext syntax (like typing [[ and ]] to link to another page). It is already available and in use on some Wikipedia projects. Please see mw:Help:VisualEditor/FAQ for more information.

When this software arrives, you will have the option to use it or to use the current wikitext editor. When you press "edit", you will get the new VisualEditor software. To use the wikitext editor, you can press "edit source". For more information about how to use VisualEditor, see mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide.

It is important that editors on this wiki test the new editor before it is deployed. This would let us know about any serious issues specific to this Wikipedia before the rollout. To enable VisualEditor now, go to your "Preferences", select "Beta Features", tick "VisualEditor" and save your changes. Please let us know if you find any problems. If you're willing and able, please report the issue in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product. If you would prefer not to, please explain the issue you found on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org. If you notice major issues impacting your project, we would appreciate it if you could let us know directly. Please leave a note on my talk page or, if it’s an emergency, like an unexpected bug causing widespread issues, reach out to James Forrester, the Product Manager, at jforrester@wikimedia.org for immediate attention.

We would also appreciate help with translation with the pages about VisualEditor here and on MediaWiki.org, and its user interface. See VisualEditor TranslationCentral for general information. To translate the user interface, start by creating an account at TranslateWiki. Once your account request is approved, all you need to do is select your language from this list. This will give you a list of individual lines and paragraphs. The English original will be on one side, with the option to "edit" on the other. The User Guide is another important document. To translate this, simply go to the MediaWiki.org page, and select "translate this page". Your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. There is more information about translating VisualEditor at VE Translation Central. Thank you, and happy editing! PEarley (WMF) (talk) 21:31, 7 Nollaig 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Can we please, please please - *not* have it enabled by default. I was involved in the deployment on enwiki, and it was a fiasco. On this minority-language wiki that I really care about, I don't want new editors to be driven away by a bug-ridden alpha-quality UI :/ - Alison 00:37, 8 Nollaig 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello Alison. If there is a strong consensus on this wiki that the editors here don't want VisualEditor at present, we can remove Irish from the Phase 4 rollout list. I definitely don't want to be forcing something on a community that does not want it. But I would urge everyone to test VE before making a decision. The version of VE we will be rolling out in January is a much different beast than the version rolled out to English in July. Many bugs have been fixed, load times are much improved, and several new features are now functioning (the new reference editor should be ready before Christmas). I have been using the interface myself a lot on English, and it is much, much better than the version that caused so much fiasco in the summer. We have recently deployed to several wikis with a similar size and active userbase to Irish, and users there have been quite happy with the interface. Irish does employ a lot of diacritical marks - if VE isn't handling these well, that is certainly a reason to delay until VE has a character inserter (expected mid-to-late January 2014). In terms of new users, I have been tracking new user usage of VE on several deployed-to wikis (Czech, Greek, and Turkish). New users who select VE have been very active, and judging from very anecdotal polling, happy with the option. All that said, we will not force VE on a wiki that has clearly articulated valid reasons why they don't want VE as default in its current state. But please, please don't judge the interface on the July en-wiki experiences. We have been working hard to improve it for the last five months, and there has been good progress from the user experience side of things. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:16, 8 Nollaig 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rollout Date and VisualEditor office hours

Hello. Again, I apologize for writing in English.

We have set a date for this wiki to have VisualEditor deployed on a wide scale. It is Jaunary 13th, 2014. Alison has raised some concerns about the software above - if others share this opinion, please let me know and we can discuss options for the rollout.

The engineering department has already planned office hours in the next months to discuss VisualEditor. The first one will be held on January 15th, at 2300 UTC; the second will be held a week later, on January 22nd, at 2300 UTC. Please join as Product Manager James Forrester discusses VisualEditor and upcoming plans. Logs will be posted on Meta after each office hour completes. (If office hours are heavily attended, it can be difficult to get to all questions, but if you want to ask a question and cannot attend or do not speak English, please let us know your question here by the day before and I will present it among possible discussion topics).

We’ll post a reminder close to the date as well.

VisualEditor now active on this wiki

Click this icon while in VE to read the User Guide

As some of you have noticed, this Wikipedia now has VisualEditor (VE) enabled for all users. There are now two tabs for editing: "Edit" and "Edit source". Click "Edit" to use the new VisualEditor. Click "Edit Source" to edit using wikitext markup.

All edits using VE will be tagged with "Tag:VisualEditor" in recent changes, watchlists, and page histories. To access the User Guide for VisualEditor, click on the "?" icon in VisualEditor’s toolbar. If you wish to disable VisualEditor, this can be done under "Editing" in your preferences tab. Translations for VisualEditor’s user interface and its help guide are still needed; go to VE Translation Central for information on how to help out with this, or contact me on my talk page.

Please report any "bugs" or errors you come across at MediaWiki’s VisualEditor Feedback Page. Happy editing, PEarley (WMF) (talk) 19:31, 15 Eanáir 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks community guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC.

Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora).

However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required.

We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4. Our Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members.

Please join this RfC -- and share your advice.

All users are welcome to participate, whether you are active on Commons, Wikipedia, other Wikimedia project -- or any site that uses content from our free media repository.

You are also welcome to join tomorrow's Office hours chat on IRC, this Thursday, January 16, at 19:00 UTC, if you would like to discuss this project with our team and other community members.

We look forward to a constructive discussion with you, so we can make a more informed decision together on this important topic. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 06:47, 16 Eanáir 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Photos taken of members of the European Parliament

From Monday 3 February to Thursday 6 February a group of about 50 Wikimedians were present in the European Parliament in Strasbourg to take photos of members of the European Parliament. From about half of all members (766) of the parliament there have been photos taken during these days. Still a lot of them have to be uploaded to Commons. Also from members from Ireland photos have been taken. A part from the pictures already have been added to articles on the various language Wikipedias, but many not. Please help us with that. If you add a photo in one language, it would be recommended to add the photo also to the articles in other languages.

The category with photos can be found on Commons here and includes also the other photos that have been taken by the group members during the project in Strasbourg.

On all the photos there is a special template to mark this project and gives more information about it. We would like to have this template translated into at least all the 24 official languages of the European Union and if possible also in other languages spoken in the EU. Can anyone translate this template from English (or German/French) to Irish?

In the past weeks on several Wikipedias users started a project to write all missing articles at least from the country a language is mostly spoken in, but certainly also from all other countries of the European Union. All members of the European Parliament have an article on at least one language version of Wikipedia, but on a lot of language versions their articles are missing and still need to be written. This writing project currently happens on for example the Dutch Wikipedia.

The project page for having been at the European Parliament is at Commons at Commons:Wikipedians in European Parliament. The project is part of a larger project to take photos from members of national and regional parliaments. In the past years Wiki loves parliaments was for example active in the state parliaments in Germany. Which parliament shall be next?

Universal Language Selector will be enabled by default again on this wiki by 21 February 2014

On January 21 2014 the MediaWiki extension Universal Language Selector (ULS) was disabled on this wiki. A new preference was added for logged-in users to turn on ULS. This was done to prevent slow loading of pages due to ULS webfonts, a behaviour that had been observed by the Wikimedia Technical Operations team on some wikis.

We are now ready to enable ULS again. The temporary preference to enable ULS will be removed. A new checkbox has been added to the Language Panel to enable/disable font delivery. This will be unchecked by default for this wiki, but can be selected at any time by the users to enable webfonts. This is an interim solution while we improve the feature of webfonts delivery.

You can read the announcement and the development plan for more information. Apologies for writing this message only in English. Thank you. Runa
