Coinneach III, Rí na nAlbanach

rí na hAlban

Bhí Cináed mac Duib (Gaeilge an lae inniu: Coinneach Mac Dhuibh)[1] (Béarla: Kenneth III) , agus leasainmithe mar An Donn,[2] (roimh 967-25 Márta 1005) ina Rí na nAlbanach ó 997 go dtí 1005. Ba mhac é le Dub Mac Maol Chaluim. Déantar tagairt dó i go leor de na foinsí Albanacha mar mhac Giric mac Coinneach mac Dub, a bhfuil glacadh leis mar earráid.[3] Tá eachtra luaite sa bhliain 999 in Annála na gCeithre Máistrí ina tuairiscítear gur mharaigh Gille Coemgáin Cináeda Dúngal mac Cináeda, le linn réimis an rí.

Níl sé cinnte go mbaineann seo le himeachtaí in Albain, agus cibé an raibh ceann amháin nó iad araon mic an Rí Cináed, nó Cináed II na nAlbanach, nó duine/daoine éigin eile.[4] Mharaigh Máel Coluim II Cináed i gcath ag Maigh na mBard (Béarla:Monzievaird ) i Srath Éireann sa bhliain 1005.[5]

Cibé an raibh Boite Mac Cináeda ina mhac de Chináed, nó de Chináed II, níl sé iomlán cinnte, cé go mbíonn an tromlachan i bhfabhar Cináed. Tuairiscíodh,in Annála Uladh, gur mharaigh Máel Coluim II mac, nó garmhac Bhoite sa bhliain i 1032.[6]

Ba ghariníon Chináed í Gruoch (Gruoch ingen Boite meic Cináeda) , - Bantiarna Mhic Bheatha i ndráma 'Traigéide Mhic Bheatha' le William Shakespeare - agus bhí sí ina bean chéile ar an gcéad dul síos do Ghille Coemgáin, Rí (nó Mormaer ) Mhoireabh, agus sa dara dul síos do Rí MacBheatha. Bhí mac darbh ainm Lulach (Lulach Mac Gille Coemgáin) ag Gruoch agus Gille Coemgáin agus bhí Lulach ina chomharba ar MacBheatha ar feadh tréimhse ghearr ama. Is dócha go raibh sliocht Uilleam mac Donnchadana (nó 'Meic Uilleim') ón a chéad phósadh, de shliocht Chináed; agus maíonn Clann Mhic Aoidh gur de shliocht Chináed III iad trí iníon Lulaigh.[7]

  1. Cináed mac Duib is the Mediaeval Gaelic form.
  2. The former is probable because later English-speaking sources called him "Grim"; Old Irish donn has similar meaning to Old English greimm, which means "power" or "authority"; see Skene, Chronicles, p. 98; Hudson, Celtic Kings, p. 105.
  3. Duncan, p. 22; Smyth, pp. 220–221 and 225, prefers to assume that Kenneth had a son, Giric, who ruled jointly with his father; also ESSH, p.522, note 4.
  4. ESSH, p.520, note 5; Smyth, pp. 221–222, makes Gille Coemgáin the son of this Kenneth following ESSH, p. 580.
  5. Annals of Ulster and Chronicon Scotorum, s.a. 1005; the various versions of the Chronicle of the Kings of Alba and the Prophecy of Berchán agree on the site of the battle; ESSH, pp 522–524. Duncan, p. 22, suggests that the killer's name should be read as Giric mac Cináeda, "Giric son of Kenneth", a brother of Malcolm. If not, this Giric was presumably also killed at about this time.
  6. This Cináed and Boite's son, Smyth, pp. 220–221; Duncan, p. 32. See also ESSH, p. 571, note 7.
  7. Duncan, pp. 102–103.
