English: Gladiators reared in special schools were rigidly drilled. Drill was first introduced into the army by Rutilius in Gaul (117 B.C.) to deal with northerners, and under the Empire it became a regular feature. In this picture the victor is a Samnite who has overcome a Thracian; each is armed after the manner of his people, and both – be it noted – carry the rectangular shield adopted later in the Roman army.
